Title: Systems Engineer (Mission Solutions)
United States, Ashburn VA, US
About Us
Kägwerks designs and develops rugged, tactical operator-worn communications technologies that enable unmatched connectivity and integrated secure networking for the individual warfighter.
We strive to increase the survivability and lethality of the warfighter on the battlefield. We do so by providing unmatched integrated tactical communications solutions that help further our national security objectives.
About the Role
Kägwerks is seeking a hands-on Systems Engineer to join our Mission Solutions team in Ashburn, Virginia. This role focuses on software-centric systems integration, turning partner technologies into functional proof-of-concept integrations that expand the capability of the DOCK Ultra platform.
A typical project involves working directly with technology partners to integrate third-party solutions into the Kägwerks ecosystem. You will help identify new tech capabilities, work directly with partners, integrate their technology into our platform, and deliver a working proof of concept that demonstrates feasibility. Once complete, the project is handed over to the Engineering team for full productization.
Success in this role requires strong networking fundamentals, Linux experience, and the ability to understand software systems, usually while performing some coding or scripting. You will also support engineering activities more broadly and collaborate with multiple internal and external teams. Candidates with experience in defense technology, tactical communications, or telecom systems are particularly encouraged to apply.
This is a hands-on, onsite role where full-time presence is essential, with reasonable flexibility as required.
Key activities will include:
• Working with third-party technology providers to integrate their software into the Kägwerks platform.
• Designing and building prototype integrations that demonstrate system capability.
• Performing hands-on networking, Linux configuration, software troubleshooting, and light scripting.
• Collaborating with Solutions Engineering on customer demonstrations and internal testing.
• Documenting prototype work and handing off successful integrations to Engineering for product development.
• Supporting early research and exploration of new technologies relevant to the Kägwerks ecosystem.
• Contributing to broader engineering support activities across the Mission Solutions team.
About You
You are a technically curious systems engineer who enjoys solving integration challenges across software, hardware, and networking domains. You have practical experience working with Linux-based systems, understand IP networking principles, and can write basic scripts to automate or validate system behavior. You are comfortable digging into software components even if your day-to-day coding responsibilities are light.
You bring a structured yet adaptable approach to problem-solving and can work independently through ambiguous technical requirements. You communicate clearly, collaborate effectively with both internal engineering teams and external partners, and maintain strong documentation practices.
A background in defense technology, tactical systems, radio communications, or telecom will set you up for success, but candidates with comparable integration experience are welcome to apply.
You thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy hands-on technical work, and take pride in delivering functional prototypes that demonstrate new capability.
Benefits and Culture
Our culture is supportive and collaborative. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team where we share our ideas and innovation is strongly encouraged. We are looking for someone with genuine passion and a can-do attitude. Our staff receive 15 days accrued paid time off per year, 10 Federal holidays, an opportunity to join our sponsored health plan, a generous 401k plan with immediate vesting and a matching employer contribution, an Employee Assistance Program, and more.
Additionally, we offer flexible core working hours and we take a personal approach to training and development.
